I’ve always thought US recycling rates should be higher than they are, but the latest numbers on aluminium cans show real momentum:

• a full 7 percentage point rise in beverage can recycling rates from 58.1% to 65.1% in 2011
• an average recycled content level of 68%
• 61 billion cans recovered
• saving 17 million barrels of oil in energy.

It’s also pleasing to see a 75% target for can recycling by 2015.
