Impact assessment

Geothermal systems are becoming increasingly prolific in the Chalk aquifer beneath London, which is also home to a large number of groundwater abstractions. The Environment Agency controls new abstractions from and discharges to the London Chalk aquifer to protect the groundwater resource and to ensure that existing users are protected.

Any geothermal scheme that is likely to have a significant adverse impact on existing groundwater users would not be permitted by the EA. It is therefore essential to evaluate the potential impact associated with a proposed geothermal scheme at an early stage in the development process in order to manage regulatory risk.
