A new report on Whey Products in East Europe from leading food and drinks consultancy Zenith International reveals a region representing significant opportunities that are being developed by local and international companies alike.

The report examines four main whey product sectors – sweet whey, demineralised whey, whey protein concentrates (WPC) and whey protein isolates (WPI) – and analyses both the supply and demand for these across East Europe, with special emphasis on the following EU accession states - Poland, the Czech Republic, the Baltic States, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia.

"Compared to established Western European markets, demand for whey products in East Europe still remains underdeveloped. However, the rate of progress over the past three years, particularly in production of sweet whey powder has been impressive, increasing by 30% on 2000 levels to nearly 111,000 tonnes in 2003," according to Zenith Market Consultant Esther Renfrew.

In terms of usage of whey products, Poland accounted for more than 56% in 2003 among the countries considered in the report, driven by the country's established chocolate confectionery industry, which has the likes of international companies such as Masterfoods, Nestlé and Fazer producing locally. The food processing industries of the Czech Republic were the next most significant users of whey products accounting for 18% of demand.

"In East European accession states, increasing production of ripened cheese throughout all markets has led to the supply of liquid whey being processed rising significantly, with many local companies developing export markets for sweet whey powder in both the Middle East and Asia. French company Euroserum has been among the first international companies to tap into the potential opportunities in the market, establishing local processing facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic, " Esther Renfrew added.

The whey processing sector in East Europe will likely undergo some significant changes over the next few years as local companies begin to expand their product offering. "Sweet whey powder, particularly from countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic, has been the mainstay among dairy processors in the region over the past five years. However, EU accession and increasing demand for more functional food ingredients from far more developed food industries in West Europe is likely to result in local Polish and other Eastern European whey processors investing in technology to produce more added value products (e.g. WPC) in the future," concluded Esther Renfrew.

The 2004 Zenith Report on Whey Products in East Europe contains 233 pages, with country profiles, tables and detailed commentary.
