Zenith’s 2012 UK Bottled Water market report, its 21st annual edition, shows that overall volume sales grew by 2.1% in 2011 to 2,099 million litres.

Retail sizes under 10 litres, which accounted for 87% of the total, advanced by 3.0%. In contrast, the bottled water cooler market declined by 3.1%, due to continued challenging economic conditions and loss of business to point of use coolers which use mains water supplies.

“After 20 years of dramatic growth, bottled water was held back from 2006 by a combination of a switch in types of water coolers, poor summers, the economic downturn and environmental concerns”, explained Zenith Chairman Richard Hall. “Now, bottled water is back on the move again, driven by its key benefits of healthy hydration, on-the-go convenience, competitive pricing and environmental measures from lightweighting to recycled content in packaging,” he added.

“Consumers continue to value the bottled water offering. With no calories or sugar, bottled water is providing consumers with a healthy hydration choice at a time when there is a continued consumer and media focus on health and wellbeing. We have seen particularly strong growth in the impulse channel as consumers look for convenient and healthy hydration on-the-go”, commented Natural Hydration Council General Manager Kinvara Carey.

Amongst other findings of the 2012 Zenith report:

Still water was responsible for 86% of 2011 volume and sparkling water 14%.

Natural mineral water took a 62% share, spring water 30%, purified water 2% and other waters 6%.

Locally produced waters accounted for 78% and imported waters 22%.

Bottled water coolers fell to 13% of consumption, compared with a peak of 22% in 2003.

Packaged retail volumes are now at a record level.

The most popular retail pack size is 50cl, followed by 2 litre and 1.5 litre.

The top five retail brands by volume are Evian, Highland Spring, Buxton, Volvic and Nestlé Pure Life.

Zenith forecasts anticipate continuing moderate overall growth, taking sales up a further 14% to 2,400 million litres in 2016.

“The Middle East beverage market has tremendous growth potential, but businesses need to plan carefully”, commented Richard Hall, Chairman of specialist consultancy Zenith International, which is organising the event. “Consumer demands are bound to grow as well, from price and value through taste and fun to health and the environment. Our BevME Congress provides a forum to address these issues as well as share insights and best practice from elsewhere, at the same time as allowing for networking and informal discussion.”

The West European water cooler market stood at 2.69 million units at the end of 2010, according to new research from leading drinks consultancy Zenith International. After a challenging couple of years, hampered by the global economic downturn, companies in a number of countries are reporting revived interest from households as well as businesses.

The number of plumbed-in mains water coolers (point of use) units surged by 8% in 2010, topping the 1 million mark and taking their share of the total to 38%. These gains, however, were insufficient to offset bottled water cooler losses, resulting in an overall 0.3% decline.

"The industry is in a much better position than a year ago" commented Zenith Senior Market Analyst Charmaine Holmes. "The difficult economic climate forced companies to improve efficiencies and returns. Losses have now slowed".

The United Kingdom remains the leading national market within West Europe, followed by Italy. Together they hold a 40% share. 2010 saw distinct variations in performance across the region: with Austria, Italy and Belgium the strongest performers; whilst Greece, Ireland and Spain suffered the largest declines.

"Industry associations are now firmly embracing the notion of ‘one industry, two solutions’, reflecting the movement towards the dual offering of both bottled water coolers and point of use (POU), particularly in the North and West of the region," added Charmaine Holmes.

Looking to the future, Zenith forecasts that, during the next five years, nearly 500,000 extra coolers will be installed across West Europe, taking the combined installed base to around 3.2 million in 2015, with the share of POU expected to surpass 45%.

In response to client requests, a full UK country profile has been included for the first time, instead of being issued as a separate report. This brings the number of countries profiled to 16.

As part of the 5th Global Dairy Congress, the inaugural Zenith Dairy Awards were announced yesterday evening during a gala dinner at the Belosselsky-Belozersky Palace in St Petersburg.

In recognition of outstanding individual contributions to the world of dairy, the 2011 awards were presented to:

Tom Coley, former Head of the Global Dairy Strategic Business unit for Nestlé SA and Nestlé R&D Innovator Emeritus in 2010. In his distinguished career, he was also a Board member of the Dairy Partners of America joint venture with Fonterra in Latin America and a member of the International Dairy Federation Board.

Luc Morelon, former Senior Communications Director and External Public Relations Officer for Lactalis Group during a period of major expansion. He was previously Chairman of the European Dairy Association and is currently Chairman of the French Dairy Industry Federation as well as a member of the International Dairy Federation Board.

Zenith Chairman Richard Hall commented: “These new awards are for industry leaders who have made an exceptional contribution through long and committed service and who have really reached the zenith of achievement on behalf of the dairy sector. We are delighted to be able to honour two such inspirational and worthy recipients.”

“The influence of both Tom and Luc goes far beyond what we have been able to highlight this evening”, added Zenith Dairy Consulting Director Kevin Bellamy, “but those within the industry fully recognise the role they have played in supporting and developing the dairy industry throughout their careers.”

The Zenith Dairy Awards were presented by leading food and drink consultancy Zenith International, which also organised the 5th Global Dairy Congress.

Zenith's 2011 UK Bottled Water market report, its 20th annual edition, shows that overall volume sales grew by 0.7% in 2010 to 2,055 million litres. Retail sizes under 10 litres, which accounted for 83% of the total, achieved 2.4% growth.

In contrast, the bottled cooler market declined by 8.3%, due to ongoing challenging economic conditions and continued loss of business to plumbed-in water coolers, also known as point of use machines.

"There remain five key dynamics in the UK bottled water market at the moment and they are not all pointing in the same direction", commented Zenith Chairman Richard Hall.

"We have always believed that the benefits of convenient healthy hydration create an underlying momentum towards long term growth. Against that, concerns have been raised about environmental impact, but these are progressively being answered. The economic downturn has been another adverse factor in the past three years, putting greater emphasis on value for money.

The weather is also an important variable - very poor in both 2007 and 2008, but somewhat more favourable in 2009 and 2010. Finally, the water cooler segment has changed dramatically - from rapid growth in bottles to even higher consumption from point of use", he concluded.

Amongst other findings of the 2011 Zenith report:

Still water was responsible for 86% of 2010 volume and sparkling water 14%.

Natural mineral water took a 61% share, spring water 28%, purified water 2% and other waters 9%.

Locally produced waters accounted for 76% and imported waters 24%.

Bottled water coolers have fallen to 14% of consumption, compared with 21% in 2004.

Packaged retail volumes are 4% higher than five years ago.

The most popular retail pack size is 50cl, followed by 2 litre and 1.5 litre.

The top five retail brands by volume are Evian, Highland Spring, Volvic, Buxton and Aqua-Pura.

Zenith's forecasts anticipate continuing moderate overall growth, taking sales up a further 14% to 2,340 million litres by 2015.

The 2011 Zenith Report on UK Bottled Water contains 199 pages with a full market commentary, 29 charts, 31 detailed tables and 35 company profiles. The first ever report on premium bottled water, by specialist consultancy Zenith International, estimates that global sales rose from 9.4 billion litres in 2009 to 9.5 billion litres in 2010. This represents 6.3% of all bottled water consumption in pack sizes up to 10 litres.

"Premium bottled water is important because most water is very local and is sold at relatively low prices," commented Zenith Senior Consultant Karen Wells. "Adding a premium through a unique story, great design, powerful branding and communication that builds consumer loyalty can make all the difference to the success of a business."

Zenith defines premium primarily based on a brand's price and positioning within the market. There are also several different layers of premium, ranging from premium private label through everyday premium and super premium to ultra premium.

With differing dynamics in each country, Zenith's new report highlights three markets: China, Germany and the United States. The US premium market is dominated by imports such as Fiji and Evian. In Germany the segment is substantial, led by Gerolsteiner, but fragmented. China now has one of the fastest growing premium sectors worldwide, with a combination of local and imported brands. The key leading premium brands worldwide include Evian, Perrier, San Pellegrino, Vittel and Volvic.

After a slowdown in growth for premium bottled water under the recent combination of economic pressures and environmental concerns, Zenith forecasts continued expansion for premium waters.

"The best companies have improved their environmental credentials and the newly emerging middle classes in young economies with strong growth should provide renewed impetus for premium waters around the world," Karen Wells concluded.

The 2011 Zenith Report on Global Premium Bottled Water contains 81 pages of market commentary, charts and tables for 2005-09 plus topline estimates for 2010, with 16 premium brand profiles. Stevia has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity on the global stage over the past four years. A new study by leading food and drink consultancy Zenith International estimates that worldwide sales of stevia reached 3,500 metric tonnes in 2010, a 27% increase on 2009, taking its overall market value to US$285 million.

"As rising levels of obesity and diabetes continue to dominate headlines, there has never been so much emphasis on reducing our caloric intake as well as consuming healthier foods and beverages," commented Zenith Senior Market Analyst Anya Hembrough. "After persistent efforts by key producers, legislators worldwide are finally giving the green light to this new zero-calorie sweetener".

Originating from Paraguay, where stevia leaf has been valued for centuries because of its sweetening properties, stevia has been used as a sweetener in Japan and parts of South America for decades. The high intensity sweetener offers a sweetening power some three hundred times that of table sugar, without adding any calories. Widely used as a table top sweetener, stevia is increasingly being recognised as an ingredient in finished products - in particular soft drinks - thanks to its versatility. However, it is the ingredient’s all-natural credentials which make it stand out from the crowd.

The turning point in stevia's fortunes came in 2008 when steviol glycosides, the sweetening components of the leaf, were deemed to be safe and Rebaudioside A, one particular steviol glycoside, was granted GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) status in the United States. Since then, approval by legislators across the world has opened the door to new formulations and reformulations of foods and beverages with zero or reduced calorie content. Its status as a global ingredient was secured with its incorporation into leading soft drinks brands manufactured by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.

If the rise in stevia has been impressive to date, the future looks even more promising, with approval still pending in a number of regions, and European authorisation widely anticipated for later in 2011.

Compostable bottles present an increasingly attractive alternative to recycled PET for beverage companies, according to a new Drinks Biopackaging report from leading food and drink consultancy Zenith International.

Biopackaging use in the combined markets of West Europe and North America rose by 47% in 2010 to over 100 million litres, but volumes remain small as a proportion of total volume.

There is a clear need for government incentives if the market is to make a real step change, particularly in the area of drinks packaging. "While the environmental credentials of compostable bottles sit well with increasingly green-minded consumers, challenges such as price, separation from PET, and composting facilities persist," commented Zenith Senior Analyst Jenny Foulds.

Zenith's 2011 Drinks Biopackaging report finds that:

Biopackaging does have potential to improve sustainability in beverage packaging.

Increased retailer acceptance has helped compostable packaging become a mainstream opportunity.

Whilst the economic downturn may have affected demand, interest in added value, convenience and eco-friendly products will return.

Larger formats, such as 1.5 and 2 litre sizes or above, represent a relatively untapped segment.

Growing interest in locally-available renewable crops may bring additional scope.

"The use of recycled PET, however, continues to gain momentum and has overtaken compostable bottle formats," added Jenny Foulds. "Biopackaging also has to satisfy concerns about the use of food sources for non-food products."

"Despite the difficulties, we foresee continuing strong growth in development projects. If the challenges can be answered, then volume can gain serious market share," Jenny Foulds concluded.

The new phenomenon of alertness and relaxation drinks, which has developed out of the energy drinks category, has risen in less than five years to a retail value of US$521 million.

A new report by leading food and drink consultancy Zenith International - on the five key country opportunities of the United States and Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan - estimates that sales volumes have trebled since 2007 to 133 million litres in 2010, with the US becoming by far the largest national market. “Consumers are now looking for products to help them deal with pressure and to perform effectively without the use of stimulants”, commented Zenith Market Analyst Cecilia Martinez. “Alertness drinks are designed to reduce stress and focus the mind. Relaxation drinks usually contain ingredients solely to assist relaxation and in some cases to aid sleep.”

The concept of alertness and relaxation drinks started in Japan in 2005 with a flurry of products enriched with GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid). This market has now matured, but it influenced an explosion of innovation in the US. In Europe the market is just beginning to emerge, but it is hampered by a changing regulatory environment and the full impact of imminent legislation is yet to be seen.

"Alertness and relaxation drinks serve a different consumer need to energy drinks," added Cecilia Martinez. "They allow stressed consumers to purchase products over the counter that can help them unwind and focus better or sleep better."

Active ingredients in alertness and relaxation drinks have tended to be: vitamin, mineral or plant-based; amino acids such as L-theanine; or hormones, mainly melatonin. Most drinks contain a combination of active ingredients. One particular challenge is to educate and reassure the consumer of their safety and benefit.

Zenith'ss report includes over 25 brand profiles, with a commentary on the consumer positioning of each and the market's potential for the future. Alertness and relaxation drinks are forecast to see continuing annual growth of over 20% to 2013.

The new Zenith Report on Alertness and Relaxation Drinks contains 81 pages of market commentary, charts and tables together with brand profiles. The global market for beauty drinks is niche but growing, with demand being driven by an ageing time-poor population and a greater appreciation of the role that nutrition plays in beauty. A new study by leading food and drink consultancy Zenith International estimates that global sales of ready-to-drink beauty drinks reached 144 million litres in 2010, a 2.9% increase on 2009 and 29% up on 2006, taking overall global market value to 1.1 billion.

The Asia Pacific region leads the way, both in terms of consumption and innovation, with Japan the largest national market worldwide.

Nutricosmetic or cosmeceutical beverages are available in a wide range of formats, from dairy to juices and waters, with product claims that are equally diverse.

"Beauty drinks were originally aimed at more mature women looking for anti-ageing products. Today, with broadening social pressure to look good, anti-ageing regimes are starting at an earlier age," commented Zenith Senior Market Analyst Charmaine Holmes. "This has led to the introduction of brands targeting younger women, including some specifically for acne reduction in teenagers and for early skin care and protection among young adults. For more mature skins, we've come across anti-wrinkle, skin firming and plumping products."

Manufacturers have tended to use either skin 'building blocks' like collagen, hyaluronic acid and ceramide as primary ingredients, or antioxidant compounds such as carotenoids. Recent innovations, however, have brought a host of new ingredients, such as porcine placenta and superoxide dismutase.

After a period of strong growth up to 2007, the past few years have seen beauty drink market growth impacted by the global economic downturn, as companies reduced research and development spending and consumers felt constraints on their disposable income.

Nonetheless, Zenith forecasts that, as the global economy recovers, interest in beauty drinks will be reignited and the market is expected to reach 185 million litres by 2014.

The 2010 Zenith Report on Beauty Drinks contains 77 pages of market commentary, charts and tables together with brand profiles.
